Four Ways to Keep Your Employees Safe and Happy This Spring

Help Your Team Skip the Store with a Corporate Care Package

Although we’ve been social distancing for at least a year now, and COVID-19 vaccines are rolling out in every state, many people find they still have concerns about the global pandemic. Some of these same people likely work for your business.

As a corporate leader, you can quell your employees’ fears and help them stay safe and happy this spring while they wait on their vaccine dose or for your state to fully open. Here are five things you can do.

Keep Your Work from Home Policy Flexible

working from homeIf it’s possible for your employees to work from home, instating a generous remote work policy is a great way to let your employees know you care about them, their families, and their health.

You can, of course, include guidelines that help you track their accomplishments during the course of the work day, such as sending you a daily digest of their wins via email at the end of the day. But don’t be surprised if their productivity actually increases. A Stanford University study of 16,000 workers over nine months found that working from home increased productivity by 13 percent. The same study found that attrition rates dropped by 50 percent when employees were allowed to work from home.

You can, of course, give the option of coming in and working from the office; flexible days at their desk versus an either/or situation are particularly helpful for parents of children whose in-person or hybrid school schedules aren’t yet ironed out.

Allow for Breaks During the Work Day

Of course you allow for the number of breaks your state mandates. But letting your team members take an extra 10 or 15 minutes during a stressful time can actually help them be more productive.

In fact, recent research has shown people who take regularly scheduled breaks every hour or so get more done and have better focus than those who try to power through their full eight hours. The Pomodoro Technique is one example of these work-break theories. It calls for a 25-minute work session followed by a five-minute break, plus a 15-minute break at least once every two hours.

Breaks are most refreshing when your team members can stand up, stretch, and walk away from their workstations.

Continue to Provide Necessary Safety Equipment and Cleaning Supplies

ppe and cleaning equipmentIf you expect your employees to work from the office, be cognizant of whether they have adequate supplies for sanitizing and social distancing.

Create hand sanitizer stations throughout your office, and keep the dispensers filled. Stock these stations with disinfectant sprays and cleaning cloths, and encourage your teams to wipe down their desks every day.

Provide a few reusable masks for your employees to wear while at work, so they aren’t responsible for maintaining a large supply of their own.

Continue using plexiglass dividers or other social distancing tools for as long as your team members feel it’s necessary and based on the advice of your local health department.

Sure, it can be tiresome to do all these things, but it’s worth it if it means fewer people call out sick with coronavirus symptoms.
