Losing Steam? Try These to Reach Your Goals
Nearly everyone sets resolutions for the new year, even if they aren’t goals in the traditional sense. For example, some people choose a word to represent the year and participate in activities related to that word. Others decide to aim for self-improvement. Still others write a mantra for the next 365 days.
It doesn’t really matter how you’ve gone about your resolutions; chances are, you’ll stop pursuing them early on. A study by Strava suggests that 80 percent of all resolutions fall by the wayside by January 19. They’ve dubbed it “Quitter’s Day.”
But we know you aren’t really a quitter! It’s just too easy to get busy with other things and lose sight of what you decided was important to you this year. So what’s a goal-getter to do when they start losing motivation? Try these tricks to encourage yourself to continue working toward your goals.
Turn Your Resolution Into Bite-Size Pieces, Much Like the Snacks in Our Care Packages
If you’ve made a large, ominous goal, it can feel impossible to achieve. Even the most motivated people can get overwhelmed by resolutions that really put the pressure on them. Instead of pursuing a seriously massive goal, create mini-goals – sub-goals, if you will – that lead up to achieving the big one.
For example, let’s say your big goal was to improve your health by decreasing your BMI by five full points this year based on what your doctor has suggested for you to reduce your risk of Type 2 diabetes. If you’re 5’4” and 200 pounds, your BMI is 34. To achieve your goal, you’ll need to lose about 50 pounds. Instead of setting a goal to lose 50 pounds by the end of the year, break your goal down into more easily-achievable mini goals. You might say that you want to lose five pounds per month and reach your goal by the end of October, with a two-month grace period.
For each month you achieve your goal, you’re one step closer to your larger resolution, but you get to feel the satisfaction of reaching your goals over an extended period of time.[row] [col span__sm=”12″]
Include a Reward System for a Job Well Done
Although you’ll definitely get satisfaction from simply achieving your goals, some people need a little extra motivation. Select a reasonable reward for each part of your resolution you meet, and treat yourself at each of these steps.
For example, if your goal is to read one book per month, for each month you complete your reading, reward yourself with something small – perhaps a new accessory, gourmet latte, or a new beauty product. When you’ve completed all your small goals and reach your major resolution, choose a larger reward – perhaps a relaxation gift set from The Care Crate Co.
Recruit an Accountability Buddy
It’s easier to reach your goals when you have someone who can help keep you honest. If you have a friend whose goals are similar to yours, work together to meet them. Even if your goals are very different, you can still hold each other accountable, though.
Schedule a weekly call with your accountability buddy, during which time you talk about what you’ve done to work toward your resolutions. Discuss your intentions for each week with your buddy, and then follow up the next week.
Remind Yourself of Why You’re Doing This
One reason people frequently stop pursuing their resolutions is that they lose sight of why they set them in the first place. Determine a way to remind yourself why, and display it around your home.
If reading is your goal, perhaps you keep your library card in plain sight in your kitchen or living room. If losing weight for your health is your goal, you might consider creating a visual chart to help you track your progress.[/col] [/row]
